The long running FX series from Trek is a fully evolved range of flat handlebar bikes that are lightweight, comfortable and versatile. An excellent choice if you’re looking for one bike that’s a useful multi-use machine, or you’re in need of a practical commuter to complement your mountain bike.
Trek’s FX range starts with the affordable FX 1 and FX 1 Disc but here we’re taking a look at a Bay Cycles’ bestseller, the FX 3 Disc.
At the heart of the FX 3 Disc is a frame built with Trek’s Gold Series aluminium tubing and a carbon fork leading the way up front. This keep’s the bike’s weight low and gives it a sprightly feel, with quick acceleration. Aluminium components – handlebars, seatpost etc – and no suspension, all help the cause. The FX3 is substantially lighter than a cheaper hybrid bike or equivalently priced mountain bike.
The light but strong wheelset is shod with 32mm puncture resistant tyres, and these, along with the carbon fork contribute to a smooth and comfortable ride quality. A padded saddle and ergonomic vibration damping handlebar grips add to the refinement – keeping you riding for longer with fewer aches and pains.
When it comes to the riding position, these FX leisure bikes strike a nice balance of comfort and performance. Upright enough so you feel safe in traffic and when riding with your family, yet purposeful and sporty enough to cheat a headwind or push on faster if you’re running late.
Hydraulic disc brakes are standard kit on the FX 2 Disc and above. This FX 3 model uses tried and tested disc brakes from Shimano, which give plenty of stopping power but are easy to control and modulate speed. Reliability is a strong point with Shimano disc brakes – just ask our mechanics!
It’s Shimano for the gears as well as the brakes and the 2x9 (18 speed) transmission is a proven performer. Easy to use trigger shifters are a welcome sight – not everyone gets on with the twist shifters that are a common spec choice on cheaper entry-level bikes. A chain guard on the cranks keeps your clothing clean; useful if you’re commuting or running errands in town.
A high quality build is standard with any Trek bike, and the FX 3 Disc carries a lifetime frame warranty too. At this price there are few, if any, compromises to the spec sheet, so the parts fitted are durable and reliable.
