2023 Trek FX+ and Dual Sport+ are Lightweight, Great Value E-Bikes

The New Trek FX+ and DS+ Lightweight Leisure E-Bikes – All you need to know

If you've been considering an E-bike for leisure, commuting or fitness but been put off by the added weight and high price tags then take a look at the new Trek FX+ 2 and Dual Sport+ 2.

These two E-bikes use the same lightweight aluminium frame design and Hyena motor but each has its own focus regarding riding terrain and use. Low weight and affordability are top of the agenda but without compromising on Trek's renowned quality.

Range Overview

Sleek, discreet looks

The FX+ and Dual Sport+ E-bikes are fitted with a Hyena rear-wheel drive electric motor  – rather than a crank driven motor such as Bosch – teamed up with a 250Wh battery mounted discreetly within the bike's frame. Take a quick look and it’s hard to identify them as E-bikes, which is an added bonus when it comes to security.

Lightweight and manageable

Out of the box, the fully equipped FX+ 2 and Dual Sport+ 2 weigh in at under 18 kg – much lighter than Trek’s Bosch powered e-bikes such as the popular Allant+ and practical Verve+ models.

This low weight makes a noticeable difference not just when lifting or moving these bikes but also when on the move too. There’s a lighter, sporty feel but without compromising balance or stability as the internally mounted battery keeps the weight low on the bike.

The FX+ and Dual Sport+ are available in two frame styles and with colour options in each. Ease of use is boosted further if you opt for the ‘Stagger’ frame style, allowing the rider to step over the lowered top tube. This is a real benefit when the bike is loaded with luggage, or if you have flexibility issues.

Plenty of easy to control power

The discreet rear-wheel motor provides plenty of immediate assistance for riders needing to deal with the stop-and-start nature of urban riding, especially in a hilly area such as Torquay or the surrounding Devon countryside.

The pedal-assist motor powers the bike up to a 25 km/h maximum speed, so headwinds and hills are not the enemy they can be on a regular bike – you can keep pedalling beyond that speed but you won’t be getting a boost from the motor. Depending on the terrain and how much effort you want to put in there are three assistance levels which you can toggle between with a convenient on-bar controller.

The FX+ and Dual Sport+ may not have the punchy power of the Bosch Performance CX equipped E-bikes but with 40Nm of torque the Hyena motor is adequate for all but the heaviest of riders on a fully ladened bike.

Bay Cycles has test bikes available with both Bosch and Hyena systems if you would like to compare them – please get in touch to arrange a ride.

Range anxiety? No need to worry…

Although the range of the integrated 250Wh battery will vary with rider weight, weather conditions and type of terrain, you can get up to 55km (34 miles) from one full charge.

That’s more than enough for a leisure ride or a few days of running errands around town but this can be boosted with an additional range extender battery that easily attaches to the bike’s frame fittings.

Fit for purpose

Both the FX+ and Dual Sport+ are suitably equipped for the job in hand. It’s up to you to decide – with guidance from our staff if needed – which E-bike suits your needs. We have test bikes available so you can experience how user-friendly, lightweight and convenient these E-bikes are.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2

If you're looking to explore further afield, away from traffic and onto rougher unpaved roads and gravel paths then the Dual Sport+ 2 is our recommendation. Using the same motor, battery and controller as the FX+ 2, Trek has designed the Dual Sport+ bikes with a focus on multi-terrain comfort.

Low weight is a priority with this bike too, so simplicity is the key here and rather than adding a heavy suspension fork, Trek has fitted broad tyres that provide comfort as well as grip and stability. Whether you're navigating town centre pot-holes, or the loose gravel of forest roads the Dual Sport+ 2 has your back.

Add mudguards or splash guards for weather protection and lightweight bags for your day ride essentials – we can talk you through the options.

With a more laid back vibe than the FX+, it trades sporty handling for versatility and multi-surface confidence.

  • Mid-size 650B (27.5”) wheels – Easy to manoeuvre and control
